Welcome to LodgingGuide's hospitality industry listings for the Florida's Space Coast area.
On Florida's Atlantic side, between the Orlando resort and amusement area a short drive to the north, and the Palm Beaches a short drive to the south, are the towns of Melbourne, Cocoa Beach and Titusville, collectively known as the Space Coast. Space travel and technology are the vertex of applied science, reflecting the acumen of the human species as a whole, and not just that of one country. The center of man's effort to explore outer space, and the place from which the most sophisticated travel vehicles in history actually are launched into outer space, is in the middle of one of the least touched and best preserved natural areas on the planet. The 140,000 acre Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, the oldest and best preserved area of original Florida dunes, marshes, reptiles, birds, fish and others, is the home of NASA's Kennedy Space Center at Cape Canaveral, just east across the NASA Causeway from Titusville. In addition to the programs offered by the NASA Visitor Center, where you actually can handle pieces of rock from the Moon, meet a real astronaut, see the amazing work of the Hubble Space Telescope, and crawl around inside real used space capsules, the Brevard Zoo and a few private companies offer kayak and airboat tours into the Florida wilderness which are well worth your time. Melbourne is the larger and southernmost of the Space Coast cities, and serves as the downtown business and governmental center for this area. Cocoa Beach, between Melbourne and Titusville, is more of a bedroom community for NASA and auxiliary personnel. The Space Coast is also, like other Florida coastal areas, great for sunbathing on its exceptional beaches, and is home to many championship golf courses. In fact, the focus on space tourism leaves the beaches and golf courses of Brevard County relatively less crowded than in other Florida areas where these elements are more the main attraction. The irony of Florida's Space Coast is that the most tecnnologically advanced area on the planet is in many respects one of the more undeveloped and tranquil areas of natural beauty left to enjoy.
